What’s in this guide

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the best questions you should ask when finding a financial adviser. Whether you’re new to financial planning or looking to reassess your current situation, these inquiries will help you navigate the process with confidence. These are important questions to ask your financial adviser right from the first meeting. You can usually get a free initial consultation and we’re going to help you get the most from that opportunity to help you in choosing the right financial adviser.

What is a Financial Adviser?

Before diving into the crucial questions that are worth asking an adviser, it’s essential to understand the role of a financial adviser. The adviser is a professional who provides guidance on various aspects of financial planning, including investment management, pension and retirement planning, estate planning, and more. They help individuals and families make informed decisions to achieve their financial goals.

How Can an Adviser Help Me?

An adviser can provide advice that is personalised and tailored to your unique financial situation and goals. They can help you create a comprehensive financial plan, identify opportunities for growth, mitigate risks, and navigate complex financial matters such as tax planning and insurance coverage. By leveraging their expertise, you can make informed decisions that align with your long-term objectives.

Why Financial Advice You Can Trust is Vital

Trust is paramount when working with a financial adviser. Entrusting someone with your financial well-being requires confidence in their expertise, integrity, and commitment to acting in your best interests. Choosing a reputable and trustworthy adviser ensures that you receive reliable guidance and peace of mind knowing that your financial future is in capable hands.

Best Questions to Ask a Financial Adviser During Your First Meeting

1. Are You Qualified to Provide Financial Advice?

All advisers must hold minimum qualifications, typically at least QCF Level 4 for pensions and investment advice. This means they are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) Some specialised areas may require additional certifications, such as pension transfers or equity release. Inquiring about the adviser’s qualifications ensures they possess the necessary expertise to provide sound financial guidance tailored to your situation.

In recent years, this has become even more important as social media has brought many financial “gurus”, “coaches” and “experts”. From within this community of financial influencers, there are some brilliant sources of information, but without being qualified and regulated, they aren’t held to account for anything they say. When a properly qualified adviser says anything about the types of investment products you should or any other recommendation, their livelihood could be on the line. If the FCA finds that a recommendation is unsuitable or negligent, the consequences can be severe. It’s good to know that the person helping you build a future for you and your family has some skin in the game.

2. Are You Independent?

It’s essential to inquire about the services an adviser offers and whether they operate independently. The designation “independent financial adviser” holds specific requirements outlined by regulatory standards. Independent advisers must offer financial products from the whole market and provide unbiased advice based on a thorough analysis. On the other hand, restricted advisers may specialise in specific products or providers. Understanding their scope can help you assess the breadth of options available to you.

Using a restricted financial adviser doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be getting ‘bad’ advice. All advisers must have a similar minimum level of qualifications and meet the same standards. It just means that the choices available to you may limited and the adviser works for, or is tied to a provider.

Issues can come from this setup, where naturally the provider they work for incentivises the adviser to “sell” the in-house products.

An independent adviser offering unrestricted advice can find you the best possible solution from the whole of the market.

There are some excellent restricted advisers out there, Buy all they can do is the best their employer allows.

3. If You’re Not Independent, Can You Look at Products from Across the Market?

If an adviser operates under restrictions, it’s vital to ensure they still offer a diverse range of products from multiple providers. Limited product recommendations may restrict your choices and potentially impact your financial outcomes. Checking the adviser’s ability to access products from across the market ensures you have the flexibility to select options aligned with your needs and preferences.

4. Can You Walk Me Through Your Financial Planning Approach?

During your initial meeting with an adviser, it’s essential to gain insight into their approach to the planning process. Asking this question allows you to understand how the adviser structures their services and tailors recommendations to meet your specific needs. A thorough explanation of their approach provides clarity on the steps involved, from initial assessment to ongoing monitoring and adjustments. By understanding their process, you can gauge the thoroughness and suitability of the adviser’s approach to addressing your financial objectives and concerns.

5. What Is Your Investment Approach, and Why?

Inquiring about the investment strategies recommended by your financial adviser is crucial during your first meeting. Understanding the rationale behind their recommendations allows you to assess alignment with your financial objectives, risk tolerance, and time horizon.

By discussing investment strategies, you gain insight into the adviser’s expertise and approach to portfolio management. Whether it’s diversification, asset allocation, or risk management, clarity on recommended strategies empowers you to make informed decisions regarding your financial products.

As most of us know, past performance isn’t a great guide for future investment decisions and no matter how good the track record is, the value of your investments can fall as well as rise. But an adviser should have a strong belief in their investment philosophy and be able to explain it clearly.

6. What Do You Charge and How Much Am I Likely to Pay?

In your first meeting with a financial adviser, it’s crucial to understand their fee structure. Financial advisers are obligated to disclose their charges upfront before you become a client. They may charge by the hour, a fixed fee, or a percentage of your pension pot or investments. However, determining the exact cost can vary depending on your specific needs and the level of service required. While advisers may not provide an exact figure, they should offer an estimate and possibly an upper limit to give you clarity on potential expenses.

7. How Often Will We Assess My Plan?

Determining the frequency of plan reviews and adjustments is essential for maintaining alignment with your goals and adapting to changing circumstances. Asking this question during your initial meeting sets expectations for ongoing communication and monitoring. Regular reviews ensure that your plan remains relevant and effective, allowing for timely adjustments as needed. By understanding the frequency of reviews, you can ensure proactive management of your finances and stay on track towards achieving your long-term objectives.

8. Can You Include My Family And Business in My Plan?

During your initial meeting with a financial adviser, it’s essential to discuss how your family and business factor into your planning. By asking this question, you can ensure that your adviser considers the holistic aspects of your financial situation. Whether you’re planning for your family’s future or managing the financial aspects of your business, integrating these elements into your plan is crucial for comprehensive wealth management.

Your adviser should inquire about your family dynamics, including dependents, future goals, and any unique considerations. Additionally, if you’re a business owner, they should discuss aspects such as business succession planning, tax implications, and retirement strategies tailored to your entrepreneurial endeavors.

By addressing how your family and business fit into your plan, you can ensure that all aspects of your financial life are taken into account, leading to a more robust and personalised wealth management strategy tailored to your specific needs and objectives.

9. Do You Have Many Clients in a Similar Position to Me?

Understanding the adviser’s client base can provide insights into their expertise and suitability for your needs. Some advisers may specialise in clients with specific asset sizes or investable amounts, while others cater to a broader range of individuals. Knowing whether the adviser has experience advising clients similar to you can instil confidence in their ability to address your goals effectively.

10. Can You Assist Me with Mortgages, Will Updates, Equity Release, Pension Transfers, and Protection Advice?

During your initial meeting with a financial adviser, it’s crucial to explore the breadth of services they offer to address your diverse financial needs comprehensively. By asking this question, you can determine whether the adviser provides holistic support across various financial areas, including mortgages, will updates, equity release, pension transfers, and protection advice.

A reputable financial adviser should offer a wide range of services to cater to your evolving financial requirements. In addition to assistance with mortgages, will updates, equity release, and pension transfers, they should also provide guidance on protection strategies to safeguard your financial well-being and that of your loved ones.

Protection advice may encompass various aspects, such as life insurance, critical illness cover, income protection, and estate planning. By addressing these key areas, your adviser can help you mitigate risks, protect your assets, and ensure financial security for you and your family in the face of unforeseen circumstances.

By enlisting the services of a financial adviser who offers comprehensive financial solutions, including protection advice, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing that your plan is robust, well-rounded, and tailored to your individual needs and aspirations.

11. How Am I Protected in The Event of Things Going Wrong?

When seeking regulated advice, you are entitled to certain protections. Financial advisers must provide personalised recommendations based on your circumstances, ensuring accountability for their advice. In the event of mis-selling or unsuitable recommendations, you have recourse to file a complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service and protection under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, providing added peace of mind. This should all be automatically in place, but you should check and ask what else they have to put your mind at ease.

What Questions Will a Financial Adviser Ask Me?

During your initial meeting with a financial adviser, they will likely ask you a series of questions to gain a comprehensive understanding of your financial situation, goals, and risk tolerance. Some common questions may include:

  • What is your main financial concern at the moment?
  • What are your short-term and long-term financial goals?
  • What is your current financial situation, including income, assets, and liabilities?
  • Do you have any specific concerns or priorities regarding your finances?
  • Have you worked with a financial adviser before, and if so, what was your experience?
  • Do you currently have a plan for your finances and how detailed is it?
  • How does investing make you feel?
  • What are your hobbies, interests and passions?

What Should I Do After the Meeting?

After meeting with a financial adviser and discussing your financial objectives and concerns, there are several steps you can take to ensure you make informed decisions moving forward:

  1. Review the Information Provided: Take time to review any materials or guidance provided by the adviser during your meeting.
  2. Clarify Any Uncertainties: If you have any questions or concerns about the advice or recommendations given, don’t hesitate to follow up with your adviser for clarification.
  3. Consider Your Options: Evaluate the proposed planning relationship and investment strategies in light of your goals, priorities, and personal preferences.
  4. Make an Informed Decision: Once you’ve weighed your options, make an informed decision about whether to move forward with this adviser or explore other alternatives.
  5. Monitor Your Progress: Whether you work with this adviser or not, you should regularly monitor your financial progress and revisit your financial plan as needed to ensure it remains aligned with your evolving goals and circumstances.

By asking the right questions and taking proactive steps, you can confidently navigate the process of working with a financial adviser and make decisions that support your long-term financial success.
